The Onaqui wild horse herds are a complex and fascinating social structure. These horses live in large, closely knit family groups known as bands, which are led by a dominant stallion and a group of mares. In 1971 the THE WILD FREE-ROAMING HORSES AND BURROS ACT OF 1971 (PUBLIC LAW 92-195) was adopted by the US Government in order to PROTECT wild horses in the West.
